FOREST OF PALMS OF SAN JOSÉ AND OCOL


The Institute of Investigation of Peruvian (IIAP) Amazonia, ONG Nature and International (NCI) Culture, The Municipality Distrital of Molinopampa and the population of the Rural Community of Taulia Monolipampa, they have begun the studies to achieve the technical file that will be presented to the Ministry of the Atmosphere, for the creation of an Area of Private Communal (ACPC) Conservation of Forests of Palm.

For this reason, one has worked for the obtaining of the permits corresponding point of the community like of the General Forest Address and Fauna Silvestre.

This forest of palms is only in the world for its characteristics, biodiversity wealth, endemismo and wealth paisajista. Likewise the recognition of this ACPC looks for to protect the floors, the wild life and the scenarios paisajísticos and cultural of this area.

This ACPC covers an approximate surface of 1039 there is and it is in the rural community of Taulia-Molinopampa (district of Molinopampa), in front of the annexes of Tingo, Pumahermana, San José and Ocol, mainly in the county of Chachapoyas, Department of Amazons. It is next to the area of conservation of the basin of the river Huamanpata where IIAP-NCI comes working from 2005.

IIAP through studies developed by José Alvares Alonso and Kember Mejía in previous expeditions, they alerted of the wealth of the biodiversity of species of birds and unique and unknown palms in this emblemático forest, icon of the tourist natural potential next to the waterfall of Gocta and other natural important elements that it houses the beautiful Region Amazons. The Management of IIAP Amazons comes leading these processes inside the strategic mark and operation of this headquarters.

The area where you/they are the palms sandal about 80 Km2, there being you reduced but of half of the original forest, the floors are sour (pH. 4.8) and the altitudes of influence of the palms are between the 2300 and 2700 msnm.

The palms belong to the gender Ceroxylon and they possess 16 m of height on the average, they are hermaphrodite (of bisexual flowers) plants, with a single floración (months of February to March) time, they are protected in their entirety by a serous layer that makes them resistant to the invasion of insects, birds or other organisms, they possess germinative high capacity in situ, and with dense populations of up to 800 palms for hectare.

Denominated "pona" for the villagers, the shaft of the palm is used in the construction of walls of the houses and the leaves are quoted as religious symbols in time of sacred week and in the employer party of Corpus Christi in Molinopampa.

Their singular importance resides in that the species is endemic of the area, the structural formation of the forest (palmeral) is ONLY in the country and at the moment it is in serious disappearance danger, due to the agricultural and forest activities in the place.
