THE SARCOPHAGUSES DE

KARAJIATOUR SARCOPHAGUSES DE KARAJIA AND TOWN OF DIED

Located in the cracks of the hillside of a headland, to a height of 2702 m.s.n.m. in the coordinates 06º.09.75.7, south and 078º.01.26.9 west. It is located to the right margin of the gulch of Solmal, toward the right of the road that goes to Cruz Paw, politically belongs to Cruz's Paw annex, district of Trita. Not a shortcut exists toward them for that that alone they are observed at certain distance.

For their architectural and ornamental characteristics they belong to the culture Chachapoya. The place is composed mainly of 06 Purunmachos or pre-Inca contained Sarcophaguses, 05 of those which are in better state. They reach the 2 meters of high, and they present anthropomorphous form. In the left part of this group, to about 30 meters a Sarcophagus is observed approximately, with another characteristic that is in not well state, due to the inclemency of the time and the continuous profanations. These sarcophaguses, they were built to base small stones together with cement of mud combined with straw, presenting a plastered fine toward the exterior, presenting layers of painting so much facial as corporal of color red ocher and white fume. The colored of each sarcophagus is different, the lines indicate us the form of the eyes, mouth and until in some cases the gear or the sex; this hypothesis Investigating Federico outlines it Kauffman Doig who also dió a classification to different Purunmachos or existent Sarcophaguses in the County of Luya. It is interesting to stress that these sarcophaguses consist of two parts: head and busts worked in compact form and the funeral capsule that it figures to the contour of the body. The head this crowned by a headdress or skull trophy. Each sarcophagus was dedicated to bury a single individual, the one which previously was mummified, placed in fetal position or of squatting, wrapped up with cotton mantels forming a bale and bundle with rush strings or cabuya, for then to be placed looking toward the front on a deer leather. It usually accompanied to the body ceramios and other materials that according to the belief of the time, it will accompany to the soul in their trip to the further on. The residents call in their native language to these sarcophaguses, Purunmachos or Purunmatshus that old Father means, and it is mentioned that in them the ethnic maximum bosses were probably buried. Local people call to the sarcophaguses, Purunmachus, that is to say, old deceased. The sarcophaguses of Karajía were made with dry straw and clay of cream color. Contrary to the mausoleums like those of Revash, in the sarcophaguses the body of a single character was deposited who was placed in fetal position or of squatting. In the main part of Karajía they have been evidences of eight sarcophaguses, two of those which are partially destroyed. Sarcophaguses exist in other places of the region Chachapoyas (Solmal, Yambata, Chipurik, Lic and Tingorbamba) but these they are the best conserved.
