THE STRENGTH DE CHANQUILLO

It is a sample of the architecture of the state Moche or Mochica, which is known by their adobe pyramids and their bloody ceremonies where prisoners and warriors were sacrificed in honor to the gods.

The state Moche had a quite significant advance in the field of the poliorcética or construction of fortifications, following Gordon's investigations R. Willey five types of fortified constructions are identified:
1. Mountain havens.
2. Mountain platforms.
3. Strengths.
4. Big walls.
5. Villages organized in the summits of the surrounded mountains of fortifications.

One of the used systems was the construction of superimposed built artificial platforms with the help of adobes or blocks of mud dryings in the sun, (due to the dryness of the mean this type of structures is very convenient) starting from these platforms he/she left adding to the parallel combined walls and toast or turrets which served as much for the observation as for the launching of projectiles of all type against the attackers.

As the techniques of war and the power of the state moche increased these fortifications they combined with big walls fortified with turrets and fortified towns that they impeded the access of the invaders in the limits of the territory.

One of the best examples for this time is the call "castle of Tomaval", strength formed by a series of superimposed platforms in way contained around a sharp hill, these defenses were supplemented with walls and towers.

Another interesting strength is that of Chanquillo, in the image you can appreciate its main elements: Two circular parallel walls that surround the hill, turrets distributed throughout the walls and a central enclosure walled with rectangular and circular rooms.

Chanquillo visited in the XIX century by George Squier who made a topographical good rising; they also explored it Ernst Middendorf, Antonio Raimondi, Julio C.Tello and other more; investigation works have been carried out by Dra. Rosa Fung Pine Grove with Arql. Victor Pimentel Gurmendi, and also for Arql. Iván Ghezzi.

To arrive until Chanquillo, he/she takes the road that goes for the valley of Casma, the reference point in this valley it is San Rafael's sector, or choosing the one on the way to deviation in the Km. 361 of the highway Pan-American North.

DESCRIPTION

It is integrated by three constructive units and it occupies an extensive area.

In the high part of a mountain, a construction of three ovoid, concentric walls is profiled, with entrances or willing accesses strategically that they open the way to well elaborated corridors whose roofs are made with thick locust timbers, very even and that they still support the weight of the wall that he/she runs for above.

The Last wall contains two plant constructions to circulate and toward the South side a group of rectangular rooms.

All the constructions in Chanquillo are made with stones of the same place, the quarries are visible, the mud used for the mortar and those plastered were brought from the valley. It is more, the walls were colored of several colors and inside the corridors in the walls became engravings, Rosa Fung found and it registered some in 1967, of those that are only some lines.

In front of this voluminous construction, in the low part on a rocky ram, there is a group of 13 constructions you cube aligned, each one of them has two lateral perrons that allow to arrive to the high part, they explain their function and relationship with the building of the walls that is to the front.

Behind the rocky mentioned ram there is a conserved wide building, with a great interior surrounded patio of diverse rooms and passages that allow us to deduce that this constructive unit was Palacio. On the other hand, the building of the walls a Strength and that it was also good for observations or astronomical studies.

Date achieved by means of C 14 that you fix it antiquity of Chanquillo in 342 exists + /- 80 years to.n.and.

The sample picked up for the analysis radiocarbónico was of one of the timbers of locust of the roof of an access passage.

This monumental architecture, has features of the Culture Santa, to the South end, because this architecture type is in the basins of Santa-Lacramarca and Nepeña.
