SLAUGHTER IN TIP WOLVES: TO DIE IN TIP WOLVES

Near 200 bodies found in Huarmey they are the silent testimony of the human biggest sacrifice in the before Columbus time. He/she learns part of the history here.

It grows dark. All the fishermen already return with their replete nets of fish that their sisters, mothers and wives receive. They wait for them in the coast with a mixture of sadness and surprise, because they know what will happen to their dear beings well when the last sunbeam shines on the beach. They await in the coast the supreme priest, surrounded of a reduced retinue of novices, and the soldiers, with the great emperor's banners Chimú: one by one they go separating the "men of the sea", choosing them according to their age, size and contextura.

Brief chicha sips alternate to the prayers; the fishermen, subjected to the will of the sea - the god Neither -, they are tied of feet and hands for not interrupting the ceremony with some flight intent. The women come the enormous caravan of semi-nude fishermen and enmarrocados to go toward the sacrifice area where they will be beheaded. In the horizon, the sun already hides.

THE DISCOVERY

They spent more than 600 years and, in 1997, the mining company Antamina had in project the construction of a shipment port in the beach Tip Wolves, in Huarmey. The works were stopped when an archaeological place was identified in a contiguous area to the work. This way, with the approval of the National Institute of Culture (INC), the Project Archaeological Tip Wolves began in January of 1998.

In a principle it was thought that the place was a cemetery of a community of fishermen. But the found bodies that were increasing until adding 107 in a sector of the beach, seemed to be almost intact and everything pointed to a great sacrifice. Plus still if next to them they were remains of flames.

"In another sector of the beach and to scarce meters of the area of sacrifices, we register a group of offerings: big vessels and pots of mud, plates and jars made of matés, which contained foods, a net and fishing weights with use prints, among other objects", the director of the project, Héctor counts Walde.

"It is the first time that a human large-scale sacrifice is so well documented. We knew that those ceremonies happened, but we never get so clear" tests, he/she adds. "Up to now."

THE DOCUMENTARY

Although little diffused, the news was not ignored in the world. And when the producer Meredith Fisher, of the realizadora from New York Engel Brothers Mediates, he/she read an article on the discovery, he/she understood that there was good material to make a documentary. And it began this way to rotate the project that Amy relapsed in the directress Bucher.

"That that more it impacted me it was the death toll, few times seen in discoveries of this nature. Did he/she want to know what the forensic doctors would say, could they tell us how all these people had died? Would the specialists be able to tell us what what happened here is?", Bucher counts.

"It is impressive to look him/her the face to somebody that lived hundred of years ago, he/she makes that the past is much realler", Bucher rehearses, when we request him/her that he/she explains to us why the mummies attract the public so much. "Many times you/they can be seen the expression of their face, the hair, the fingernails, their skin. And to see this way them, so well conserved in spite of last so much time, it fascinates people."

Through National Geographic one comes presenting the documentary of Bucher on the discovery of Tip Wolves, one of the most important discoveries in the last times and that it could be key to understand a moment up to now little studied of our history.

SACRIFICE CHIMÚ

"Toward the XIV century, under the reign of Minchancaman, the Empire Chimú sacrificed 200 fishermen in a great ceremony for Neither, the supreme god of the sea. The semi-nude fishermen, bundles and with the covered eyes, they walked until the bank of the beach, in front of the waves. One to one, they were put of knees, while the officiating one introduced with stability the knife above the right clavicle, looking for the arteries, until achieving the individual's" death, the archaeologist explains to Héctor Walde who adds that it is about the first sacrifice Chimú that has been.

"Those sacrificed were in their majority males between 18 and 35 years, except for two youths smaller than 15 and some adults bigger than 45 years. All they were devoted to the fishing works and gathering", the discoverer supplements, specifying that the remains were given to the Museum of Place of Sechín in Casma.

NEIGHBORS AND ENEMIES

Chimú was developed during the Late Intermission (900 -1400) in the same area where centuries before made it Mochica. With their nucleus in Chán-Chán, very near Trujillo, Chimú you ended up expanding for the north until you Knock down and until Huarmey for the south.

In spite of the fact that in the valley they have not been carried out the necessary studies to give us an exact idea of the structure, customs and the populations' preincaicas language in the area, it is known that in Huarmey small groups dedicated to the fishing and the gathering flourished.

Not many years would pass from the massive sacrifice of Huarmey until the irruption of the Inca in the territory of Chimú that you/they were subjected toward 1470 for Túpac Yupanqui.

THE TOWN MADE IT

The recordings, carried out in 2003, were an extraordinary experience it doesn't only stop the realizadores, but also for the 70 residents of Huarmey that accepted of very good grade the proposal of the documentalista Amy Bucher of recreating the moment of the sacrifices, even using very near reproductions to the original wardrobe that the old residents of the area used. The scenes, recorded with great realism, didn't need of a special illumination, because the picture director, Larry Engel, used natural light entirely.

To carry out the program there demanded to transfer near 30 baggage pieces that contained digital cameras of professional format, teams of digital picture, hundred of cable meters, sound systems, microphones and mixture console, all material of last technology that was employee in the documentary, coordinated locally by the producer Bibiana Melzi.

Not it is the first time that Melzi works with the team of Bucher, next to who has carried out other projects for National Geographic and Discovery Channel, as those dedicated to the cultures Chachapoya and Chiribaya. The team of Engel Brothers already plans a new project on the mummies of Paracas that he/she stores the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Free Town.

MUSEUM IN MARCH

At the present time, the skeletons, vessels and other discovered offerings are in the Museum of Place of Sechín, in Casma, while the development of the project Tip Wolves is completed that contemplates the construction of a place museum - similar to the one that there is in Túcume - in Huarmey.

The project comes being financed by mining Antamina through the Association Ancash. "We hope the new museum completes investigation works and permanent exhibition to the community and the visitors of the found remains, conviertiéndose in a pole of tourist and cultural development of the area", Gonzalo explains to Quijandría, manager of Corporate Communication of Antamina.
