RIVER APURIMAC

The river Apurímac is one of the main rivers of Peru that constitutes the superior part of the course of the river Ucayali, and it leaves of the main course of the river Amazons. He/she originates in the mountain range of Andes, in the the Snowed mountain Mismi (5597 m), between Cuzco and Arequipa, 650 kilometers to the southeast of Lima and 160 km to the west of the basin of the lake Titicaca, being the most distant source in the amazon basin.

It flows toward the northwest, reflecting through the regions of Cuzco and Ayacucho. He/she takes the river name Jan starting from their fork with the river Mantaro, to some 400 m of altitude, a point that marks the triple fork among the regions of Junín, Ayacucho and Cuzco (12°15'45 "S 73°58'30 "OR). Plus below, Jan, having received for the right the waters of the river Urubamba, he/she transforms into the river Ucayali.

During great part of their 700 kms of journey, it flows through narrow cañónes and their itinerary is interrupted by cascades and rapids.
