JUANITA, THE GIRL OF THE ICE

For: Schoolmaster José Antonio Chávez Chávez Main Professor of the or.C.S.M.

"In the time of the Inca, the relationship man-nature, it was represented in all their magic beliefs - religious that sustained their reason of being in this world."

Supernatural countless beings were worshipped this way by the Inca, Viracocha (the Creator), Inti (the Sun), Yllapa (the God of the Climate), likewise others of regional importance as Huanacauri, Pachacamac, Pariacaca, Coropuna. Not it is of missing that Guamán Poma of Ayala will inform that the priests that were to the service of these important sanctuaries, were considered among the most privileged in the Inca emperor.

In the Inca culture, it was given by the way that people originated in the mountains and of other geographical accidents. It was pointed out some mountains like people's progenitors, not stopping to be right partly, because each geographical region gives life to its residents; the beliefs of nowadays they show that same idea in some places, in which its residents offer them the best in their crops surrendering I pay them for their offered goods.

The Inca carried out human offerings for diverse reasons: When the emperor went to the war, when he died or it made sick, in the most important festivals in June or December. The huacas received part of the offerings of Capaccocha.

In the south of Peru, one of the most important huacas is the volcano Coropuna (6,675 m.s.n.m.) located in the region of Contisuyo and considered as the fifth more important huaca in time of the Inca; in front of him, to the west, we have to the volcano Sara Sara, and to the east the volcano Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya, Ampato, Huarancante, Chachani, Misti, Pichu Pichu and the western chain of you walk they that it includes Moquegua and Tacna and that they also house countless volcanos, some of them at the moment in activity.

The Project "Sanctuaries of Height of the Andean" South, comes investigating the volcanos from the year from 1979 to the present time. During this period they have been carried out investigations in the volcanos of Pichu Pichu, Huarancante, Calcha, Chachani, Misti, being in them different elements of offerings and in Pichu Pichu, the boy's body that was plundered the year of 1964.

Toward the year of 1978, we begin the investigation work in what is the basin of the River Ocoña - Cotahuasi, traveling everything her from the area of Puica, Razorbill, Taurisma, Tomepampa, Cotahuasi, Bull, Chaupo, Velinga, I Fit, Caspi, Quechualla, Chaucalla where unite the rivers Marán that comes from the area of Ayacucho and then with the river Chichas or it Arms that he/she comes from the snowy of Firura and Coropuna, going this last by the area of Weapon, Salamanca, Chichas and ending in Chilpacay in the Big river of Ocoña.

In the year of 1965 there are news that in Coropuna they were discovered a funeral Incan bale as well as some ceramic (it was not known the place unerringly of where they were plundered; in a recent expedition, October 96, we have been able to locate the exact place to the foot of the volcano Coropuna.)

Toward the year of 1989, we discover impiortantes archaeological evidences in the snowy of Coropuna, as well as in their suburbs, not being given to know fearing the huaqueros, lifting cartographic plans of this area; in the year 1991, we return to the same place of Coropuna increasing the scientific information.

As part of our investigation project: "Sanctuaries of Height of the Andean" South the 2 of September of 1995 organize an expedition to the volcano Ampato to observe the effects of the eruption of the volcano Sabancaya and the possible detection of some archaeological evidence; being able to locate to the denominated mummy "JUANITA, THE GIRL OF THE ICES", (The Lady of Ampato, The maiden from Andes, etc.) in very good conservation state, to exception of some parts of their body that were exposed to the elements. This discovery forces us to return quickly later one month to be able to investigate a part of the sanctuary and to locate two more mummies toward 5,800 m.s.n.m., registering around seven places in the itinerary from Cabanaconde toward the summit and that they are related with this sanctuary.

We carry out a new expedition toward the month of August from 1996 to the volcano Pichu Pichu, in which two more mummies were opposing and their respective offerings; toward the month of September of the present year, our team investigates the volcano Sara Sara, summit very huaqueada, recovering a mummy as well as their personal offerings. An isolated offering is also located.

The stories of the columnists in this sense are corroborated by the field investigations that one comes executing; the Inca have carried out children's offerings in the summits and in certain you leave aledañas to this mountains. In the case of Arequipa, it is possible that some of the offerings that were executed in their such suburbs as Pichu Pichu, Misti, Chachani, etc, be due to the eruption of the volcano Misti (Putina or the volcano without name in that date). Our field investigations come demonstrating that the volcano Misti erupcionó toward the year of 1440 - 1450, being a completely catastrophic event for the llacta that time runes that recidían in what today is Arequipa, is demonstrated it by means of a stratum of ashes of 10 cm. Of thickness that said volcano hurtled in that date and that it covered everything Arequipa. Asímismo continues the field investigations to determine if the volcano Ampato or Sabancaya entered in eruption for that date the same as the volcano Misti.

Juanita's, 530 years old dated radiocarbónico before the present and that it locates us AD more or less toward the year of 1,466, it could be showing us the sense of some of the informations of the columnists already expressed previously.

Arequipa has been, to our approach, desolated by earthquakes, alluviums and volcanic eruptions that have not allowed the bloom of a great culture in the past.

At the present time, our Center of Investigations bill with 6 special freezers whose temperatures can arrive until -26º C, as well as two special cameras of exhibition and conservation and a camera of transport; and a house has been conditioned especially for these works and conservation of the archaeological materials.
