THE CANYON OF

COLCACHIVAY - COPORAQUE - YANQUE - ICHUPAMPA - ACHOMA - HE/SHE ROTS - LARI - MADRIGAL - CABANACONDE

In 1920 the aviators Robert Shipee and George Johnson in his expedition aerofotografía found a valley interandino to which denominated "The Lost Valley of the Inca", in a second carried out expedition the following year, they realized that this valley this furrowed by a canyon of very vertical walls, in that opportunity they were carried out the first mensurations, having an approximate depth 3000 meters.

In 1981, a Polish expedition after being interned 33 days inside canyon measures with apparatuses of little precision, they estimated that he/she had 3250 meters deep.

In the last expedition carried out to the canyon of Colca in the 2005, headed by the mathematician and Polish expeditionary Andrew Pietowski it was revealed that in the adjacent area to the town of Quillo Orco, in the district of Huambo, the depth of the Canyon Colca 4,160 m reached. in the north side and 3.600 meters in the south side. The Polish investigator explained that the mensurations vary with the step of the years due to several factors, among them, the sinking of the channel of the river and the use of more and more precise technologies.

The formation of Canyon of Colca was given approximately in the tectonic Andean and Quechua stages, that is to say in the last 150 million years, but its profundización process is due to several factors like the growth of the Mountain range of Andes, desglaciaciones during the Quaternary one, and mainly for the erosive quick processes caused by the river Colca.

Finally, the formation of the primitive Canyon Colca should be had initiate approximately about 10 million years ago behind, but its current form probably corresponds to the last million years, that is to say to the Quaternary one.

The morphology of the great Canyon of Colca, it was influenced by the volcanic activities of Sabancaya and Hualca Hualca, happened inside the last million years whose deposits formed a natural dike of more than 5 Km. of base and 500 m of height, trapping to the river Colca for hundred to thousands of years, generating this way the formation of a great lake that would have extended from the town of Madrigal until Yanque.

After thousands of years the abrupt rupture of the dike took place originating the current profundización of the canyon, it is in this stage that the canyon of Colca shows up as a narrow pass several meters deep and not very wide that locally is narrowed in the places Incasaltana and Inca Bridge; it is deepened waters below, to become a canyon of big proportions abruptly with slopes that skirt the 60° of inclination, it is common to find steep vertical of hundred of meters of difference with a vertical (Oasis-Cabanaconde) perfect disjunction. The margin right has a strong and continuous slope from the summit of snowy Bomboya until the bottom of the canyon.
