THE TOWN DE MARAS


Maras is a district of the county of Urubamba, where you can arrive through a highway affirmed starting from the km. 50 of the road Qosqo - Chinchero - Urubamba; located to the occident from Qosqo to 3300 m.s.n.m. and on a plain that was a great plateau in prehistoric time. From there it is appreciated part of the mountain range of Urubamba and the snowy summits of "Weqey Willka" (today "Verónica", 5682 mts.) and "Chikón (5530 mts)." Apparently it was a town preinkásico with later discontinuous occupation; in this area they are great quantity of ceramic fragments of the culture Chanapata, as well as raspers and obsidian knives. The town was founded in the colony by Spanish Pedro Ortiz of Orué, and its occupation important empiezó when the noble cusqueños of Inkario was robbed of their palaces in Qosqo and they had to leave to settle down in other small towns as San Sebastian and Maras. Equally, in the war begun by Manko Inka for the recovery of their Quechua Nation, Maras served as bastion for the invaders in its incursions against the town of busy Ollantaytambo for Inka during 2 years. Many of their houses are emblazoned with nobiliary shields in their stone lintels what indicates the importance acquired in that time when it was place in passing forced for the muleteers and their packs of mules that transported tropical products and especially leaves of coca from the forest high cusqueña to satisfy the necessities of the city of Qosqo and the country. "Villa of San Francisco from Assisi of Maras" was declared (Villa: city or town that he/she had certain privileges); in that time he/she had much more importance than the town of Urubamba, but today is a town that languishes as consequence of its isolation and the development of the modern life. It possesses a church manufactured in adobes, typical of the religious rustic architecture in whose atrium is a cross worked in granite; to the interior of the church they stay canvases of school cusqueña representing the Apostles and other whose author is the painter Quechua don Antonio Sinchi Roqa Inka who was natural of Maras and he painted with a lot of care for his church; this was contemporary of the bishop Mollinedo and Angle, and it reached celebrity by the middle of the XVII century
