SALINERAS DE MARAS

Toward the northwest of the town of Maras they are the famous salineras up to where you can arrive on foot for the one on the way to horseshoe or in car for the earth highway that is almost impassable in the station of rains. The salineras of well-known Maras for some like "mines of salt" are constituted by about 3000 small wells with an area average of about 5 m², built in a side of the inclination of the mountain of "Qaqawiñay" that you/they are filled during the dry season or they "water" every 3 days with salted water that emanates of a flowing one natural located in the superior part of the wells so that when evaporating the water, the salt contained in this solidifies gradually. That process will continue approximately for one month until obtaining a considerable volume of solid salt, of about 10 cms. of height from the floor that later on is hit and this way granulated; the salt will be pocketed later in plastic sacks and correspondent to the markets of the region; today that salt is being yodada for what its consumption is not harmful.
