ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX DE PISAC
I POPULATE OLD

Archaeological Písac, is constituted like one of the monumental most beautiful centers in the since valley combines the landscape with the impeccable finish of its constructions.

It is located in the highest hill in the city, on a dry and rocky surface.

Next to Cusco and Piquillacta, Písac closes an equilateral triangle of 33 Kms. of side, precisely planned to protect the city of the possible attacks of Antis (Anti drift of "Andes" or mountains) who you/they were their worst enemies.

The same as in other Inca constructions, some studies give bill that it was not about a strength, but of kind of a real" "country property, property of Inca Pachacutec, made up of platforms, domestic and ceremonial structures, and aqueducts that provided the water for the agricultural exploitation.

Some constructions, distributed throughout Písac Old Town or Archaeological Písac are:

The wall
The wall doesn't have the conception that today knows. Formerly, he/she responded to a continuous construction that was not necessary for the whole city. Some of their stones have astonishing dimensions.

It gathers five doors, located in the oriental part of the complex. The only one that has lintel calls you Amaru Punku that means "Door of the Snakes."

The tunnels
Two tunnels located in the hill of Písac exist. The first go toward the north, and he/she has 16 mts. of long; the second he/she goes to the summit and it is of 3 mts.

The Inca bridge
In the complex of Písac there was more than a hanging bridge. One was in Paccháyoc, where the bases still subsist. And the other one, in the western side of Intihuatana.

The deposits
It is about six colcas of same dimension, prepared in arrays that would have served as Inca deposits. They are located to 200 mts. of Intihuatana, and it is necessary to cross cliffs to arrive. The path that unites to these colcas finishes in a perron of 102 steps that you/they ascend parallelly to a channel of water.

The andenería groups
The economic main activity of the town of Písac was the agriculture. Hence, 16 agricultural sectors that contain complex and advanced platforms exist; five are separated by walls. Písac is the place with more stylistic variety of platforms. It possesses at least 14 forms different from built platforms from the 2,995 until the 3,450 msnm.

The Inca cemetery
It is located to the front of the archaeological complex, only separated by the creek Quitamayu. It is an impressive place, located in a hill of almost a hundred meters high and several kilometers of extension, belonging to the mountain Linliy. This cemetery is known as Tankanamarka (tankay = to push, marka = place; it can be translated as launching" "place), and it should have contained 10,000 tombs approximately. The Inca believed in the reincarnation, hence they kept to their mummies with all their properties and necessary (saddlebags) foods for their new life. When the Spaniards found out this habit, they didn't doubt to profane the tombs and to plunder the jewels, metals and precious stones. Today small holes, product of the profanation can be observed.

Torres' "City"
Písac is also known as Torres'" "City, since it possesses more than twenty towers built in the salient borders of the mountain. They are of perfect finish, very similar to the constructions of Sacsayhuaman. It is not still known which their exact function was, only some would have been associated to hydraulic existent leftovers in the place.

Charmed Ñusta
It is a place located in the road toward the south that leads to the hill Ñustayoc. It is about the statue of a woman that takes their saddlebags in the back. The tradition of the city counts that the woman is Inquill, a princess that didn't support the curiosity of seeing the concluded work of her engaged one.

Písac doesn't escape to the Inca famous legends. The city presents a statue that has a very particular one: it is said that the cacique Huayllapuma had a daughter, called Inquill, to which had to marry the man that can build, in only one night, the bridge on the river Vilacmayo (a bridge of a lot of importance for the defense of the place). In spite of the hard task, Asto Rímac - a comely prince - he/she decided to accept the challenge, and to request the princess's hand. The authorities of the place prepared everything so that Asto Rímac began the works, while the princess should go up a hill without turning; because, otherwise, she and her engaged one would transform into stone. Almost to the dawn, the prince had culminated with the work, but Inquill, not being able to support more, it turned and it was transformed into stone until today's day.

Tiyanacuy
It is a neighborhood of small dimensions, located in the low part of the city. Here he/she will be able to find a perfect seat for two people, sculpted in a stone.

He/she Remains Silent House
It is about a rustic group of buildings of irregular line summoned in the summit of the mountain. It is of since difficult access it is necessary to draw some dangerous ravines

Písac
To the southeast another group of rectangular constructions is located whose distribution has the arch form. Their walls are considered as the most perfect in Tahuantinsuyo. It fences to this enclosure, he/she is a similar construction to a mirador. From here he/she will be able to obtain an excellent view of the valley and of the current town of Písac.

Intihuatana
This is one of the ceremonial monuments of more importance in Písac. Its location, from the superior part of the mountain, dominates great part of the valley. Their walls are of "sedimentary (the juncture of refined stones has an external rectangular surface)" type. Their sides are carved in form of hands that are locked in a semicircle, by what is considered as the Temple of the Sun of Písac.

To the center of the building he/she is an altar carved in stone, also known as Intihuatana that have been use to observe the solar movements, and I eat altar to celebrate religious ceremonies: the cult to the God Sun or sacrifices of animals. Also, to the west of the altar he/she is a carved stone that it could be good for the astronomical observations, this represented the three Andean phases of the religious world: the sky, the earthly world and the underground.

The altar has the form of a letter D, and it is perfectly guided with the exit of the sun, in the solstice of June. Only in Machu Picchu, one can see a similar rock.

The sources and the beds of water were also characteristic of this area. It is said that they had ends highly religious for the quality of their carved. The main source is located to 20 mts. of the central door of the complex, and it possesses two carvings, by way of handles that could be good for ceremonial bathrooms.

In Incan times the river Urubamba was channeled from Písac until Ollantaytambo with agricultural ends. At the moment there is many vestiges of the lateral walls of the channel, and the river Urubamba on-line straight line it flows to 3.3 Kms. of the city.
