COMPLEX ARCHAEOLOGICAL THE SORCERER - MAUSOLEUM OF THE LADY DE CAO


A young mother of tattooed skin, covered with jewels and of the symbols of power of the powerful culture Mochica, wrapped in an elaborated bale and protected by four companions in their trip to the further on, it was found in the 2006 in Huaca Cao, in the Archaeological Complex The Sorcerer. The discovery shocked to the world, and not alone because never before had been evidences that pointed out with such a certainty that there were ruling women in prehispanic Peru; also, it was about a funeral intact context and of an incredibly preserved body that solved countless questions on Mochica and at the same time it presented new enigmas on the old cultures of North Costa.

The Mrs. of Cao it was discovered in the 2006 by the archaeologists of the Archaeological Project The Sorcerer .liderados for Régulo Franco. who marveled when finding this funeral intact context. Aware of this character's value, but without knowing the surprises that would find inside the bale, they still dedicated the maximum care to study this discovery. During a meticulous and exhaustive work in laboratory, during six months the team of scientific .liderados for the archaeologist and textile specialist Arabel Fernández López, and with the participation of Dr. John Summer, physical anthropologist of the University of Tulane and expert in the bioantropología of Mochica. desenfardelaron the body and they discovered the treasures that you/they kept the 26 layers that covered to the Mrs. of Cao.

Decorated with glistening narigueras, crowns and necklaces, wrapped in exquisite textile, flanked by the weapons of power of ruling Mochica, the Mrs. of Cao, also well-known as the Lady of the Tattoos, soon it attracted the look of the whole world. Besides propitiating articles in international magazines, their replica has been visited for more than half million of people in different countries. This enigmatic character is the center of the new Museum of Place Cao, in which the visitor will be able to see to the Mrs. of original Cao after diving in the fascinating universe of the old inhabitants of the Valley of Chicama.

Besides the young person buried inside the tomb of the Mrs. of Cao, three companions protected it in their trip to the Further on, buried in near tombs. In one of them was an impressive leather vest and textile, with applications of feathers that a character of expressive face represents, elaborated in golden copper, and whose eyes and mouth have delicate shell inlays and mother-of-pearl. A similar object was in Huaca of the Moon; it is believed that it was associated to attributes chamanísticos.

In the tomb of the Mrs. of Cao they were eleven ceramios, belonging to three different periods: Mochica, Salinar and Gallinazo. A kaolin ceramio represents, apparently, a scene of the ruler's childhood. A faith healer, wrapped in a mantel in pallar form, imposes the hands to a girl in her mother's arms.

The Mrs. of Cao it was buried with two wooden big ceremonial clubs, recovered with golden copper. These symbols of power never before had been found in the tomb of a woman.

The Lady of the Tattoos was buried with fifteen necklaces of gold, copper and precious stones, besides strings of copper earrings with inlays of turquoise. A necklace of golden copper of thirty bills exists, which is an exquisite work; each one of the bills of 14 mm. of diameter it shows a face with different expression.

Besides having a great value iconográfico, the 44 narigueras with those that the was buried Mrs. of Cao they are pieces of delicate goldwork; many of them combine two metals (I pray and silver, or get paid and golden copper), generating beautiful objects that perpetuate the concept of essential duality for the old residents from Peruvian Costa. The narigueras covered him/her the mouth, conferring divinity to what came out of her. Two of the narigueras were placed intentionally inside their mouth for their funeral.

The estólicas, or propellers of lances, were weapons of symbolic great content; they were used in the ritual hunt of the deer, in which characters of high hierarchy participated. In the tomb of the Mrs. of Cao he/she was these ritual objects for the first time in the funeral of a woman. The 23 wooden estólicas, covered in golden copper that you/they accompany to the Mrs. of Cao they are ornamented with representations of birds and characters.

Thanks to the care that one had in preserving their body, 1600 years after their funeral the tattoos recorded in the skin of the Mrs. of Cao they marvel to the world. Snakes, fish and other figures loaded with symbolism wrap to the Lady of the Tattoos, like a magic armor and power.

THE BALE

To find a funeral intact context is reason of joy for the scientific community. Not alone because it is very not very frequent, but also because the relationship of the objects to each other offers information valuable envelope the beliefs and customs of last times. In the 2006, the archaeologists of the Archaeological Project The Sorcerer found intact the mausoleum of the Mrs. of Cao, buried intentionally in one of the superimposed buildings of Huaca Cao, in the Archaeological Complex The Sorcerer. An extraordinary bale
The bale that weighed 120 kilos, had drawn a human face in the external layer, to the height of the head. One of the cloths that wrapped to the Mrs. of Cao it was a continuous fabric of more than 70 meters that he/she gave 48 turns to the body. When the scientists arrived to the mummified body of the Mrs. of Cao, they discovered a metal bowl that had been placed on their face. The bowl contained cinnabar (I sulfurate of mercury), the reddish same powder that had been used to preserve its body.
