HUAMACHUCO


Capital Huamachuco of Sánchez's County Carrión, it is located in the northern part of Peru, in the mountain of the Department of the Freedom. At a distance of 180 Km. of Trujillo's city, what is equal at 8 hours of trip for the state of the highway. He/she has a population of 52,500 inhabitants approximately and it reaches a surface of 424.13 km.2. (according to reference of INEI).

Huamachuco has tourist varied attractiveness that go from the historical ones, going by the archaeological ones, until arriving to the natural ones.

Square of Weapons Huamachuco

The Square of Weapons of Huamachuco is of rectangular court and it is considered as one of the biggest from Peru. It is an amplísima Square bigger than pleasant aspect for their cares gardens, to the center Pileta highlights and around her "ecological beautiful sculptures" made of cypress, tree that allows to give the most original reasons and that it captures the most representative in the city. The School "San Nicolás", The Cathedral, Prelatura, The Charity, House of Sánchez Carrión, The Municipal Theater, and the Steeple are in the perimeter of the enormous Square, for which the population reflects day by day.

The Steeple

The steeple was built like complementary part of the Main Church. He/she was carried out by means of the work denominated "Republics." It is made of tapial with foundations of river stone, their height is of more than 20 meters. The Steeple rises to a side of the Church, in a thick arch that serves from support to a reed-mace of which you/they loll three bells. In a third level it exists another smaller arch that the previous ones and in him he/she is a bell of dismal sound that one plays when some person has died. He/she also has a small carved wooden balcony, of where one can observe the whole Square of Weapons. In their superior part it takes a roof of red tile.

House of Arches

It is located in the entrance to the city from Huamachuco to a side of the Big Bridge, it is part of the oldest constructions, it is of two plants and in first o'clock a corridor stands out with arches. Their importance resides in that it was good to offer the welcome to all the personalities that arrived to Huamachuco, like it is the case of Simón Bolívar that is offered a reception in this enclosure. It also served as general barracks while it remained in Huamachuco.

House of José Faustino Sánchez Carrión

It is located among the Shreds José Balta and Sánchez Carrión in North front of the Square of Weapons; in her the Liberator also lodged Simón Bolívar in the two expeditions that it undertook Huamachuco.

The Cathedral

It is a modern building, built by the religious in charge of Prelatura and the economic contribution of the community. It is one of the most modern and beautiful Churches in the whole Serranía of the Region. The Celebrations Eucarísticas (masses), is only carried out on Saturdays and Sundays in the schedules of 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Monumental Square of Bulls

Their construction begins when he/she was Alcalde of the County Ing. Luis Blondet Pinillos in the year of 1962 and it was finished through several governments. Museum Wamachuko

It is located in the plazuela "Tauricuxi" in the first block from the Shred Sucre to a block to the West of the Square of Weapons. It houses archaeological different objects of the culture of our ancestors.

The Shaft

It was built by the Battalion of Engineering quartered in Pallar in memory of the heroes that were immolated during the war with Chile in the Battle of the 10 of Julio of 1883.

Pileta

The Chapel "San José"

He/she has historical importance to be considered that was built on the huaca Purrumpampa of the Pre-Inca period, scenario where he/she surrendered Great Huamachuco peacefully. It is located to a side of the Square of Weapons (North side). It is an adobe chapel sent to build for Spanish Encomendadero Juan Sandoval and concluded by their wife Florence of Blackberry. It belongs to the Colonial Period. In this chapel they are carried out the celebrations eucarísticas in the following schedule: of Monday to Friday in the mornings to those 7:00 a.m. and at nights to those 7:30 p.m.

I Associate "San Nicolás"

It is the first School Centennial of the County, been founded by Don Nicolás Rebaza Cueto May 28 of 1860. This School has forged generations full with hefty patriotism and of intellectual superior qualities. Here they studied Caesar Vallejo, Carlos Uceda Castañeda, Abelardo Martingale, Julio Chiriboga, Clodomiro Guevara, Néstor Gastañadui, among other.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX MARKAWAMACHUKO

The archaeological complex Markawamachuko is located to the west of the city from Huamachuco to some 9.5 km. of distance, in a plain of the hill that takes their name. He/she has an approximate extension of 5 km. of southeast to northeast and a variable width among 400 to 600 m., it is to a height of 3595 m.s.n.m. that is to say 450 m. more than the level of the city of Huamachuco.

The monumental constructions of Markawamachuko, possibly began in the late phase of the Early (500 a.C. to 700 d.C.) Intermission and they continued during the Half (700 d.C. to 1000 d.C.) Horizon and maybe in the early phase of the Late (1000 d.C. to 1400 d.C.) Intermission.The occupation of the place had bigger duration.

In this archaeological complex the walls built on dangerous abysses and deep gulches stand out notably, the material used in these constructions is the chopped stone affirmed with wedges and together with clay cement.

According to some archaeologists, in Markawamachuko there are several orderly sectors of south to north: Hill of the Castle, Hill of the Nuns, Hill of the Corrals and Old Hill.

The Castle
It consists on a circular strength of double wall, the square great square of 60 m. and the galleries that would have completed different functions. The double wall for the fact of having been built in the cliffs of the Hill makes suppose that they served as defensive walls.

Hill of the corrals
Remains of rounded strength, rectangular rooms of medium size and skirted areas of low walls.

The Nuns' Hill
It consists on 7 circular constructions, one of those which presents a double wall circular defensive.

Old Hill
Built in a hill surrounded by a double defensive wall of character.

The construction and distribution of these enclosures demonstrate a high grade of urbanism, domain of hydraulic engineering and architectural art. Possibly the election of this place to lay the foundation the political capital here - nun of the domains of Great Wamachuko was determined by her warm climate, for the visual domain of the extensive region and for the rocky vertical flanks that transform into natural strategic defenses.

For that Huamachuco will be then, - thanks to its prehispanic inheritance and to its natural charm, one of the tourist most remarkable centers in Peru.

WIRACOCHAPAMPA

According to the Quechua language Wiracocha means Mr. or Gentleman and Pampas floor, what means "Pampas of the Mr.." some denominate it "pampas of the gods."

This citadel is located in the plains of the place that it takes its name, to 3 Km. to the North of the city, being able to arrive to her with relative easiness, walking or using vehicle, to an altitude of 3000 m.s.n.m.

He/she understands a square space of approximately 500 m. The constructions have been carried out with gritty white stone, insureds with wedges and together with cement of red clay. It presents quartz voladizos in the superior part that one shows off they were good to sustain the roof.

To the interior of the citadel there are vestiges of canals that possibly provided from water to the population. According to the conditions that it presents, it is supposed that this citadel was abandoned before concluding its construction, being ignored until the present time the causes.

In the interior they are the canchanes of gold and wood by way of squares or field of sports or of concentration for civic religious ceremonies or military talvés. it has estates, deposits, housings, temples and templetes.

According to the studies carried out in the area it is considering the possibility that their abandonment owed to the decline of the empire Wari whose residents were the initiators of the work perhaps.

At the present time these ruins serve as scenario for the presentation of Waman Raymi or "Party of the Hawk", activity that is organized as a number more than the employer grandiose festivity of Huamachuco.

Hill Amaru

Amaru means "Great Snake." Located to 7 Km. to the west of Huamachuco in the skirts of Markawamachuko. For the ruins that it possesses it seems to have been a populated important area. The Kitchen Knife

It is located to the Northeast of the pampas of Purrumpampa, and to the This of the city of Huamachuco approximately to about 3 Kms. of distance. It is a pre-Hispanic aqueduct of about 20 kms. of longitude more or less, for 6 meters high in akgunas parts. In their summit it existed a channel that took the water from the lagoon of Cushuro until Wiracochapampa, this channel he/she had a width of 15 cm. approximately. At the moment it is in a total abandonment.

Coipin

Located seven kilometers of the city of Huamachuco approximately, to the North of Markawamachuko, in an extensive hill that is on a deep gulch and whose head originates among the end of the "Hill the Castle" and principle of the "Hill of the Nuns." In their surface evidences of old walls that correspond to a city with houses and interior fields in a square way, limited by simple stone walls with high and resistant walls exist. The constructions of Coipín are very similar to those of Markawamachuko, that makes suppose that they have been the same manufacturers.

Hill Bell

This located to the Northeast margin of the Lagoon of Sausacocha, bordering with the Lagoon of Cahuadán. in the surface of this hill they are distinguished constructions of houses of pirca in a rounded way, stone mounds that represent old sepulchres made in conical form also exist. The constructions were made on a chain of platforms with miradors that it is supposed they were dedicated to the control of neighboring areas.

Lagoon Sausacocha

It is located to 6 Km. to the This of the city of Huamachuco, he/she has an extension of 172 hectares of mirror of water. their depth varies among 1.50 meters in the bank at 12 - 15 meters in the center. Their waters are of blued color and of low temperature, in them trouts and carps are raised, for their surroundings there are great quantity of totora, reed and other vegetables that serve from habitat to wild ducks and gallaretas. The lagoon is fed by the waters of the rains and for filtrations, being navigable and until it can be carried out competitions. The residents explain their origin by means of subjective legends and myths. According to their toponimia Sausacocha means: Sawsi = Sallow, Cocha = Lagoon that is to say surrounded "Lagoon of sallows." It is to an altitude of 3200 m.s.n.m.

You Dilute Thermal Yanazara

Yanazara comes from Yana = Black; Sara = Corn, what means Black Corn. It is located to about 18 Kms. of Huamachuco and to 2480 m.s.n.m., their waters have a temperature of 40 °C.; of the carried out analyses it is deduced that they contain Chloride of sodium, Chloride of Calcium, I Sulfurate of Sodium, Hyposulphite of Soda and Iron. Their waters are used with medicinal ends, especially for the treatment of the rheumatism. In Yanazara taking advantage of the natural blooming of these waters, appropriate facilities have been built to give accessibility to the tourism, at the moment bill with a Pool, skillful and dressing rooms for the visitors' comfort.

You Dilute Thermal Eden

It is located in the District of Curgos in the Hill Pillausaca to 17 Km. of Huamachuco and to 5 Km. of Curgos, their waters have a superior temperature to those of Yanazara. During the journey to arrive to these waters you can appreciate the beauty paisajística of this place. It is 2750 m.s.n.m. Their ferruginous waters, with healing numerous conditions are also used with medicinal ends.

Hill Waylillas

It is a high pick located to 30 Km. approximately of the city of Huamachuco, snowed in winter time. For their north hillside, they are still remains of what the imperial road of the Inca that Cuzco united with Cajamarca which gets lost following the sinuosity of the horizon was.
