THE TEMPLE OF SAN GERONIMO

One of the most traditional manifestations in the architecture and of the history of Ilo it constitutes it the Temple of San Gerónimo. Built in 1871 after the maremoto of 1868, the temple of San Gerónimo it is located on a great boulder that is served as support. Their structure is wooden covered later on with calamine. He/she has their roof to two waters that it also finishes off in a steeple wooden and that it culminates in a cross.

You consents to their main entrance by means of a double perron that gives symmetrically to a facade of double door and windows to both sides willing, while in the part of the triptych it conserves the window or skylight, typical detail of the houses ileñas.

Of a single piece, the temple of San Gerónimo was modified for agragarle in the later part a modern construction that gives width to the space and that it allowed to combine the traditional of the arquitectrua with the modern vision of the city.

In their interior, San Gerónimo has some interesting things: In the altar the imégenes of San Gerónimo and that of Rosario's Virgin are located. The first of them are boss of parish of Ilo and the second are Patron of the the city. Both formerly, received much of the devotion of the congregation.

Regrettably this practice has decreased in its demonstrations. The curious of both images is that the only objects that were able to survive after the maremoto of 1868, being both opposing imégenes among the boulders of the area of San Gerónimo were. That is to say that they date at least of the XIX century. Virgin María's image was adored by people of the valley. The Marshal Domingo Grandson had a lot of faith in her and he took charge to his brother to pay the annual masses in his homage among 1821 and 1828. This indicates us the antiquity of the image that today worships.

Another of their curiosities is the steeple that contains a clock of German origin donated in the decade of the 20 by don Ladislao Vásquez, a prosperous farmer of Ilo who contributed with the church this way like they made it many families of the town. But the jumping thing is their bell, one of three o'clock that exist in the steeple. This is very peculiar because it dates of 1647, it dates that it is written in a head. The bell in mention was donated "by Francisco from Caldames to the Mother of God. María" inscription that also figures in her. That same bell indicates its manufacturer, one of last name Meléndez.

The internal walls of the church were decorated with paintings that have disappeared with eltimpo and that of them some samples are only conserved, especially in the corners and in the superior town square. The reason is of plants and of algelitos in even. In the inferior part of the walls the decoration is a painting rose stick that this partially covered one for the altars located in front of her, but that one can observe in some points.

The temple has two wooden marks in those that paths images are located. These marks belonged, according to the tradition, to the mirrors of living rooms of a ship that it beached in front of the costs of Ilo and that rescued entegados went to the church for its care and use. The marine reason is noticed in this mark. We can appreciate in the a boy sat down Zeus seizing a trident seemingly; carved fish are also in this mark, something that has passed despercibido evidently for many. Initially these marks were painted in silver color but at the present time they shine a golden color. They were located in the biggest altar and at the moment they are in one of the walls of the temple.
