DISTRICT DE CATACAOS


The district of Catacaos is one of the eight districts of the county of Piura, it is to so single 12 km of the city of Piura. It is famous for their craft, gastronomy and jora chicha. He/she is a mainly agricultural town and artisan, since it is surrounded of one of the most fertile valleys in the region Grau whose cotton production, of great quality for their texture and you release fibers, it is extremely sought-after so much in Peru as abroad.

Etimológicamente speaking the word Catacaos derives of the voices moches "catac" and (grain) "chaos (exuberant)." This area was populated by Tallanes who after settling and directed by Mecnau and then for Nariwalac they were organized and they formed the nation Tallán (Tacllán for the use of the taclla, tool of agricultural work). Their god was Walac and in its honor they built an enormous sanctuary that at the moment is in restoration (I Temper Narihualá). Later on they were invaded by Mochicas and Chimús. During the colony, Catacaos was 'it Commends of Indians', receiving the name of San Juan of Catacaos. During the process of emancipation of Peru, it contributed many contingents for the liberation.

To arrive to this city is quite easy, it can take one of the so many vehicles that make service of passengers' transport between the cities of Piura and Catacaos; after a journey of approximately 15 minutes for a flat and green countryside it is entered to the town where he/she will find restoring typical of local food, very well prepared and of a very pleasant flavor. You can point out that Catacaos is known by its foods and picanterías (local restaurants) that are the villagers' forced points and of all good visitor of these beautiful and sunny lands.

They highlight among their more grateful plates: the cebiche and they can be of mere, cabrilla or cachema, accompanied by a good "plot"; (yam, yucca or zarandaja) also the "malarrabia (prepared plate with parboiled banana and cooked in water, accompanied by cheeses and olives)"; "dry of chabelo" that is cooked banana and milled with dry meat and I decorate, and of course the famous jora" "chicha, fermented drink of a type of special corn, prepared according to technical very old: they boil the jora with their ingredients, then it is packed in vessels of cooked mud, sealed and buried for their fermentation in the warm sands of Catacaos, depending the time for their grade of fermentation, and he/she takes in pitchers called "poto" or "cojudito." The picanterías is used to put a white flag in the door; when it is at half-mast he/she means that the chicha is still fermenting, and when it is to the end he/she means that the chicha is strong.
