THE GENTLEMAN'S SANCTUARY DE LOCUMBA


Their origin goes back to 1776. In the country property "The Pines", .según appeared the tradition - two white mules loaded with boxes, in those that were two images carved in wood, with the inscription "Valley of Locumba", and another that said "For the town of Sama."

In the XVIII century in the sunny valley of Locumba appears September 14 a white mule, as they count the old of the place that it took on their loin two boxes. a big one and another small one. that contained two images of Christ crucified in which it was indicated that the big box was for Sama and the small one for Locumba.The residents looked for the muleteer and the owner of the mule but they didn't find them, the mule had arrived with agile step stopping under the shades of a palm and they came closer to the one. The residents saw the boxes, they opened them, and when realizing that it was bigger than the other one they decided to keep this.

They loaded the mule with the small box and they tried to lower it being about taking that box to Sama, but the mule fell in earth like burdened by the weight and for more intent than it was made they were not able to move the mule. Finally the town decided to keep the small box that the crucified Christ contained and to send to the big one to Sama. It was changed boxes to the mule and east began to agile step again its road toward Sama until he/she was no longer seen.

Was it as well as did the small Christ want to stay in Locumba, to be worshipped in the Sanctuary where the Mr. he wants to spill his thank you, and did the big Christ stay in Sama why? . we wonder. he/she wanted This way it the Mr., so that their will is made of to stay in Locumba and to bless all person that is honest with faith it brings near Him to request him/her something.

Later on, in the small town that of there it exists, the Mr. it began to spill their Grace and the town consecrated this way it to Christ crucified as pattern, May 13 of 1784.

The temple where this the Mr. it was destroyed totally by the rains, but to the image of the Mr. it didn't pass him/her anything.

The first Bishop of Tacna Mons. Carlos Farmhouses, forms a committee for the construction of a new temple and then Mons. Alfonso Zaplana, the second Bishop of the Diocese builds the temple that today covers to the Mr. of Locumba and that it gives refuge to so many pilgrims that go in search of the Thank you of the Mr.. This makes that every year and especially in the month of September (for the day 14) the mass of pilgrims has transformed into a religious tradition that he/she understands: the practice of the sacrament of the reconciliation, the celebration of the Sacrament, participating of the procession, taking blessed water and some image of the Mr. of Locumba, requesting a blessing for the family.

The same atmosphere of the town of Locumba favors the sentence and he/she invites to a personal encounter with the Mr. of the life. It is a party without liquor, without mundane dances. A group of priests spends its time assisting the pilgrims pastorally: they administer the sacrament of the pardon, they bless people, they celebrate the Santa Mass... In Locumba all the people have the opportunity to express their faith, there nobody is excluded. Meanwhile the companies of religious dancers offer to God their dance as sentence.
