NEST DE COMEJEN, NASUTITERMES SP OR TERMITIDAE

The isópteros (Isoptera of the Greek isos, "same" and pteron, "wing"; same" "wings) they are an order of insects neópteros, well-known commonly as termites, termes, turiros or comejenes and also as white ants, although they don't have relationship with the ants (Hymenoptera:Formicidae).

Their scientific name refers to the fact that the mature termites two couples of wings of same size present. They are a group of social insects that you/they build nests (termiteros). The termites feed of the cellulose contained in the wood and their devirados, the one that synthesize thanks to the action of the protozoos of their digestive system, with those that live in symbiosis. Most of the termites is of tropical or subtropical climates, but some few ones live in temperate climates. They know each other among 2.000 [1] [2] and 3.000 species [3], six of those which have been introduced from other regions like urban plagues.

The termites are abundant and diverse in America of the South, África and Australia particularly in the tropical forests of low lands and savannas. Many species build colonies in form of mounds and other many are arboreal or of underground life. The termites that build mounds remove big quantities of earth in the hard and not very fertile floors, with what you/they contribute to the appearance of small plants that you/they can reach the size of bushes and small trees.

The termites for themselves are not able to digest the cellulose, but they can take advantage of their nutrients thanks to the cellulose degradation that you/they carry out protozoos that you/they live in symbiosis inside the digestive system of the workers. The other breeds already receive the food digested that the workers regurgitate in their mouth.

The termites have economic importance as plague in wooden structures, works of art and stored products.

They live in colonies that can count until with 3 million individuals. In each colony, the queen is the only one that puts eggs. Most of these insects lack wings but during the time of the reproduction some develop these organs and they abandon the group to form own colonies.

A colony of termites consists of three basic breeds: workers, soldiers and reproductive.

Workers

They are ápteras, sexually immature and except for the family Hodotermitidae is blind. This breed completes an important paper in the colonies, since it is the one that develops most of the works in the nest, among those that can be mentioned: the construction and maintenance of the nest; the care and feeding of the juvenile ones; feeding of the breeds that cannot feed for themselves as the soldiers and the real couple; elaboration of tunnels for the food search; grooming and cleaning of other breeds. Their body little esclerotizado is generally.

Soldiers

They are mature sterile of both sexes. They are recognized easily to have a big head and well esclerotizada that sometimes ends up being bigger than the rest of the body. Many have the jaws very developed to bite the enemy; others are more specialized and they have a pointed face associated to glands, so they can repel other animals with jets of this secretion. The secretions can be of different type, although the most normal thing is that they are toxic, repellent to sticky. Their paper is the defense of the colonies of termites.

Reproducers

Winged

The winged ones are imagos that still maintain their wings. The winged reproducers are those that new queens and kings can take place. The winged ones come out massively of the colony, when they are, it happens the mating in tunnels to avoid the depredadores and other chances. The winged ones lose the wings immediately or followed by the contact with the opposite sex.

Primary (Real Couple) reproducers

The primary reproducers are called King and it Reigns. Their bodies esclerotizados are usually well, except the female of some species whose abdomen can end up being enormous due to the hypertrophy of their ovaries.

Secondary reproducers

In the case that the queen dies or that I/you/he/she is very old and her production of eggs falls, queens substitutes can take place. They have the body usually less esclerotizado that the primary ones.

Types of Nests

Another characteristic of all the insects eusociales is the nests; in the case of the termites they present a great diversity; they sometimes present a complex architecture, being able to end up reaching formidable sizes (more than 1.000 m³ in some Macrotermes).

The primitive habitat of the termites was probably inside dead wood, as trunks, dead parts of alive trees; where the society found food and refuge, what you/they denominate as nests of a piece.

Inside the group of separate nests they are distinguished three main categories:

* Underground nests, completely below the level of the floor, they are usually about the 40 meters deep.[it mentions required]

* Nests epígeos that stand out of the surface of the floor (mounds). Some termites build the nests like columns from among 2 and 6 m guided to the north: the height and the orientation help to regulate the temperature, with a variation margin of one or two grades.

* Arboreal nests, built in trunks or in a branch of a tree that you/they are always together to the floor for covered galleries.

However, there are some intermediate nests. The nests epígeos always have a basal underground part, more or less important and sometimes preponderant, like in Hodotermitidae. Some nests epígeos are built against a trunk of a tree and if the base is reduced it spreads to become arboreal.
