MOLLUSKS AND CRUSTACEANS

The mollusks (Mollusca, of Latin molluscus, "soft") form one of the big edges of the animal Kingdom. They are spineless protóstomos celomados and segmented of soft body, I undress or protected by a shell. The mollusks are the spineless ones more numerous after the arthropods, and they include so well-known forms as the clams, pepitonas or arks, oysters, squids, octopi, dribbly and a great diversity of snails, so much marine as terrestrial.

It is calculated that it can exist close 100.000 alive species, and 35.000 extinct species, since the mollusks have a geologic long history that goes back to Precámbrico until the recent one. The mollusks colonize all the atmosphere practically, from the big heights to more than 3.000 m on the sea level until oceanic depths of more than 5.000 m of depth, in the polar or tropical waters and they are usually from all over the world elements common of the coasts.

They are animal of soft body, with three unique characteristics in the animal Kingdom for which are identified:

* A muscular foot,
* A calcareous shell secreted by an integumento called underlying mantel, in occasions is absent,
* An organ of feeding called rádula (formed by arrays of teeth curved quitinosos).

The man's interest in the mollusks is enormous. The mollusks are an important feeding source for the human species. Also, parasitic numerous illnesses so much human as veterinary sciences they are transmitted by the mollusks that act as intermediary (to see Platyhelminthes) hospedador.

Malacología is the branch of the Zoology that he/she studies the mollusks. In this sense one has that during the XVIII and XIX centuries they were elaborated important you collect malacológicas and so much conchológicas of of noted institutions like museums and academies of sciences like private collections, collecting shells of mollusks is even nowadays in the entire world one of the main hobbies of a lot of people. Due to this liking the mollusks are some of the zoological best groups studied after the vertebrates.

The crustaceans (Crustacea, of Latin crusta, "scab" and aceum, "relationship or the nature of something") are an extensive subfilo of arthropods, with more than 67.000 species and without a doubt they lack to discover until five or ten times this number [1]. They include well-known several animal groups, as the lobsters, the shrimps, the crabs, the prawns and the barnacles. The crustaceans are fundamentally aquatic and they inhabit all the depths, so much in the marine, brackish mean and of fresh water; some few ones have colonized the terrestrial mean, as the cochineal of the humidity (isópodos). The crustaceans are one of the zoological groups with biological bigger success, so much for the number of alive species as for the diversity of habitats that you/they colonize; they dominate the seas, as the insects they dominate the earth.

As own characteristic and definitoria of the group we can mention the presence of larva provided nauplio of an eye naupliano in some stage of their life that can be substituted later by two compound eyes. They are the only arthropods with two couples of antennas, they have a maxilas couple at least and they go by periods of change and intermuda to be able to grow. All except Cirripedia are of separate sexes.

To the science that he/she studies the crustaceans he/she knows it to him as carcinología.
