SAN JUAN'S PARTY

Saint John the Baptist party symbolizes the purification of the water and the joy for the dons of the nature. They are days of reflection, but also of revel and joy that inspire feelings of fraternity and of union among the children of the forest.

Hence, all the cities, towns and villages get dressed of happiness the 23 and 24 of June, to honor the saint that as they count the legends it was chosen by the own God like Pattern of Amazonía.

If, because many years ago in a town that is to few kilometers of the city of Iquitos, a member of the old tribe of Jeberos went into in the forest to mitayear (to hunt). When taking away from their llacta (town) he/she began to listen the sharp whistle of a paujil. Miró toward to all sides, but it was in vain because the bird continued whistling... and the whistle transformed into a word.

The hunter could not believe it. Somebody, from some place of the forest, pronounced their name. Instants of fear and confusion that vanished when, among the branches of a tree añoso, it was able to distinguish the figure of a saint. The man ascended to pick up it and immediately he returned to his town. It proclaimed a miracle. In the night, while he/she slept, the image was revealed in its dream as Saint John the Baptist. The Saint said that it had been designated for heaven's sake to be Patron of the whole region and as such they should worship him and to erect him/her a church.

The orders of the image were accepted by the town. A church rose and there was big festejos in honor to the Patron saint. As recompense, San Juan, by means of appearances, indicated the favorable places to sow and it determined the best time for the crops.

Beyond the legends that are plentiful charmingly in this region mysterious, the certain thing is that San Juan's religious party arrived with the Spanish conquerors and when coinciding with the date of Inti Raymi or Party of the Sun, he/she fed of elements and prehispanic rituals, transforming into a popular celebration, coalition of the native thing and the strange thing.
